Hair Loss - Baldness

It happens to the best of us! Hair loss, leading to baldness or partial baldness, can strike at any age. Although most hair loss comes as we get older, our genes, poor hair care, pregnancy and sometimes illness means that our hair can start to thin and fall out at a very young age indeed.

Hair loss is actually a natural occurrence. At any one time 90% of the hair on our head is growing. If left alone each hair grows for between two and six years after which time it is shed by the hair follicle on our scalp and replaced by a new strand emanating from the same follicle. With 90,000+ hairs all growing at once it is perfectly normal to lose as many as 100 hairs each day through general brushing and combing.

Hair loss only becomes a problem when the amount of hair falling out is significantly higher than this 'background' amount or no new hairs rise from the follicles to replace those that have fallen out. In this latter case there is little you can do although there are products on the market available to help stimulate new hair growth. But, if your hair is falling out at an alarming rate and you are concerned about it, then you should visit your GP. They will be able to determine the cause of your excessive hair loss and advise on solutions that might work for you.
