As many as one in four people in the UK will suffer from mental distress at some point in their lives. This could range from mental health problems resulting from short-lived stress related situations to long-term or terminal mental health diseases like Alzheimer's.
Whatever the cause, mental distress destroys lives and relationships, regardless of sex, age, race or financial status. At the extreme end mental distress can consume lives to the point that the only option apparently open to the sufferer is suicide. More than 4,000 people commit suicide each year as a result of poor mental health.
Understanding the causes that lead to a decline in mental health and determining the trigger points is important for all of us. Sometimes a relationship breakdown, unexpected redundancy or a death of a close relative can push someone over the edge. Reading the signs in ourselves and in others is essential as help is on hand. Psychiatrists offer a range of services to help solve mental problems. They can provide advice and offer you a route to freedom. Additionally, researchers into mental health are working around the clock to try and find solutions that will help the long-term mentally ill and those with terminal mental diseases.
